When Ron Weitzel joined Jerry Coburn hauling household garbage for 208 customers in the Athens area in 1977, he was simply looking to help out a friend.
Weitzel soon learned his friend wanted to get out of the business and one thing led to another ... He bought the company.

Weitzel named the new company "Fly-By-Nite Disposal Service" - in part to make people smile, but also to turn some heads.

The company wasn't profitable at first so Weitzel continued his career as a truck driver until he bought out a second small hauler, Carl Young.

The job became full time for Weitzel by the Fall of 1978 and in the Summer of 1979 he bought out a third hauler and the company had "a whole lot of work."

Growth was steady during the subsequent decades, including a seven year stint picking garbage in Bland County. The last big acquisition was made in 1996 when Fly-By-Nite began serving a portion of Raleigh County.

Weitzel said he he doesn't believe in pandering. "I don't like to ask to get customers. If you need our service, great. If not, that's OK too," he said.

"Who wants to be a garbage man?" Garbage hauling is the most regulated business you could ever have. It is difficult and an undertaking few stay with. Fly-By-Nite is an exception. We have a strong work ethic.

Fly-By-Nite haulers are independent contractors who supply their own trucks (3/4 ton, long bed, automatic transmission). Fly-By-Nite pays a per-day rate to the haulers and supplies the metal garbage bin units that are attached to the beds of the trucks.

Our compactors are loaded onto our roll-off truck. And our roll-off truck goes to the landfill
Our roll-off trucks can also dump 20, 30 and 40 cubic yard containers.
We have a 1 ton truck with a special bed. The bed will pickup a container in the landfill. We use this truck for extra pickups at residents.
We have 3/4 ton pickup trucks with an 8 cubic yard container in the back of the truck. These trucks are used for regular garbage pickup service on our residential routes. They can also be used for small extra pickups. When these trucks get full, they are dumped into the compactors.
